At 1,868 m above sea level, Nuwara Eliya is the heart of Sri Lanka's tea industry and the coolest spot on the island — daytime temperatures hover around 18–22°C and you'll actually want a sweater at night. The British turned it into a hill station in the 1840s, and the colonial bones (pink-brick post office, Tudor-style cottages, manicured Victoria Park) are still very much intact.
How to get to Nuwara Eliya
From Kandy: 3.5 hours by road through tea estates, or 4 hours by train to Nanu Oya station (the closest stop, 8 km from town) then a 20-minute taxi.
From Ella: 2.5 hours by road, or 3.5 hours on the famous scenic train.
From Colombo: 5 hours direct — or break the journey with a night in Kandy.
Visit a working tea estate
Pedro Tea Estate (3 km from town) and Damro Labookellie (15 km, on the way from Kandy) both run 30-minute factory tours covering plucking, withering, rolling, oxidizing and grading — finishing with a free tasting. USD 3–5 per person, no booking needed.
Bluefield and Mackwoods Labookellie are the most photogenic for the rolling tea-hills view.
Hike or drive to Horton Plains and World's End
Horton Plains National Park is a 90-minute drive from Nuwara Eliya — a high-altitude plateau with the famous 'World's End' cliff (870 m sheer drop), Baker's Falls and a flat 9 km loop trail.
Leave town by 05:30. By 09:30 the clouds roll in and the World's End view is gone for the day. Entrance is about USD 30 per foreigner including jeep transfer.
Wander Victoria Park and the old town
Victoria Park is beautifully kept and full of resident birds (whistling thrushes, kashmir flycatchers). Walk from the park to the pink-brick General Post Office, the old Grand Hotel for a Devonshire tea, and Lake Gregory for boat rides and sunset.
Ride the train to Ella
The Nanu Oya (Nuwara Eliya) to Ella section is widely rated the most scenic train ride in Asia — 3.5 hours through tea fields, tunnels and bridges. Book second-class reserved at least 30 days ahead. Your driver can drop you at Nanu Oya station and meet you in Ella with the luggage.
Where to stay
Budget: Araliya Green Hills or Galway Heights. Mid-range: Heritance Tea Factory (a converted 1930s factory) or Jetwing St Andrew's. Luxury: The Grand Hotel (colonial classic) or Ceylon Tea Trails (further out, but the bungalows are unmatched).
How long to stay
One night and one full day is enough for most travelers — a tea factory visit, Horton Plains at sunrise and an afternoon train to Ella. Add a second night if you want to do Adam's Peak or a longer hike in the Knuckles range.
