    Sri Lanka Chauffeur Service

A private chauffeur-guide is how most visitors actually see Sri Lanka. One vehicle, one driver who knows the roads and the sites, and a route that can change while you are on it. This page explains how the service works, what it covers and what it does not.

    How the service works

You tell us your dates, your group size and roughly where you want to go. We match a chauffeur and a vehicle to that plan, agree the route with you in writing, and the same chauffeur stays with you for the whole hire. For multi-day trips he collects you at the airport or your first hotel and stays with you until your departure. There is no meter and no per-kilometre surcharge on an agreed itinerary.

Public transport is inexpensive but slow, self-driving is stressful and requires a temporary Sri Lankan permit, and group coach tours run on someone else's schedule. For two to eight travellers, a private chauffeur usually lands between those options on cost and well ahead of them on flexibility. For travelers seeking a private driver in Sri Lanka, a chauffeur-guide offers a flexible way to explore multiple destinations with one dedicated vehicle and driver.

    Choosing a vehicle

    Sedan car — 1 to 3 travellers

Comfortable for couples or a small family with normal luggage. The most economical option and easy on narrow hill-country roads.

    SUV — 1 to 4 travellers

More luggage space and a higher ride, useful if you are covering long distances or heading to rougher park-edge roads.

    High-roof van — 4 to 8 travellers

Standing headroom, individual seats and a large luggage bay. The usual choice for families and small groups on multi-day routes.

    Mini-coach — 9 travellers and above

For larger private groups travelling together. We will advise when two smaller vehicles work out better than one large one.

Group sizes above assume normal luggage. If you are travelling with surfboards, golf clubs or oversized cases, tell us and we will move you up a size rather than let you find out on arrival.

    Typical route types

    Airport transfers

A single leg between Bandaranaike International Airport and your hotel, including late-night arrivals. Your chauffeur waits in arrivals with a name board.

    Day trips from your base

A full day out and back — Colombo to Sigiriya and Dambulla, Kandy from a coastal hotel, or a tea-country loop from Nuwara Eliya.

    Point-to-point transfers

One-way legs between regions, with stops along the way rather than a straight drive. Most travellers underestimate how long these take.

    Multi-day island tours

The same chauffeur and vehicle for your whole trip, following an agreed route that can still change on the road.

    Multi-day hire

On a multi-day hire the vehicle and chauffeur are yours for the duration, not just for scheduled transfers. That means unplanned stops, a change of mind about lunch, and an extra hour at a viewpoint are all normal. Days are planned around Sri Lanka's real driving times: the island is small on a map and slow on the road, and a route that looks light on paper can be five hours behind the wheel.

Where a route makes little sense we will say so. If your draft plan means long drives on three consecutive days, we will propose a version with fewer bases rather than sell the fuller-looking one.

    Driver or chauffeur-guide?

A private driver in Sri Lanka moves you between two points. A chauffeur-guide is licensed to interpret what you are seeing, deals with ticketing and logistics, and knows which entrance, which time of day and which stop is worth your effort. For airport transfers a driver is fine. For anything with sightseeing in it, a chauffeur-guide is the version almost everyone ends up wanting. Certain individual monuments still require a separate licensed site lecturer, which we can arrange on request.

    What is included

    • Licensed English-speaking chauffeur-guide
    • Air-conditioned vehicle sized to your group
    • Fuel, highway tolls and parking
    • The chauffeur's meals and accommodation on multi-day hires
    • Bottled water in the vehicle
    • Route planning advice before you travel and WhatsApp contact during the trip

    What is not included

    • Site entrance tickets and national park fees
    • Your own meals, hotels and personal expenses
    • Safari jeeps inside national parks, which are separate vehicles
    • Licensed site lecturers where a specific monument requires one
    • Tips for your chauffeur, which are appreciated but entirely optional

    Customising your hire

Nothing here is a fixed package. You can hire a chauffeur for a single airport run, for a two-week island circuit, or for the driving portion of a trip where you have already booked your own hotels. We can also handle accommodation, safari jeeps and pre-booked entrances if you would rather have one point of contact. If you want us to design the whole route, start with our custom Sri Lanka tours page; if you would rather begin from a proven route, our fixed tour packages can all be adjusted.

    Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a driver and a chauffeur-guide?

A driver takes you between two points. A chauffeur-guide is licensed to explain what you are seeing, handles ticket queues and logistics, recommends where to stop and eat, and effectively acts as your local fixer for the whole trip. Almost all of our multi-day travellers choose a chauffeur-guide.

How much does a chauffeur cost per day?

Our indicative standard-season rates are USD 70–85 per day for a sedan, USD 85–100 for an SUV and USD 95–120 for a 9-seater van. These are not guaranteed year-round prices: peak-season, Christmas/New Year and public-holiday rates may be higher, and the final quote depends on your dates, itinerary and vehicle availability. Our Private Driver Cost Guide explains the rates and multi-day estimates in more detail. Read the Private Driver Cost Guide

Where does the chauffeur sleep on a multi-day tour?

Most hotels provide driver accommodation, and that cost sits with us rather than with you. You never need to book or pay for a room for your chauffeur.

Can I change the plan while I am travelling?

Yes, and most people do. Skipping a site, staying longer somewhere you like or adding a stop is normally fine. Changes that alter hotel bookings or add a full extra day need to be agreed with us first.

    Do you offer self-drive instead?

We do not. A foreign licence is not valid in Sri Lanka without a temporary local permit, and the driving conditions are demanding for first-time visitors. A chauffeur is usually both safer and less expensive once fuel and permit costs are counted.

How many hours a day is included?

Multi-day hires are planned around a normal touring day rather than a strict clock, but chauffeurs do need rest — very early starts and very late finishes should be flagged when you book so the day can be planned around them.

Can the chauffeur speak languages other than English?

English-speaking chauffeurs are standard. Other languages can sometimes be arranged with enough notice, subject to availability, so tell us early if this matters.
