Private Chauffeur Tour Sri Lanka Cost: USD 70–120 a Day (2026)

Published by SW Ceylon Tours · Reviewed by the SW Ceylon Tours team ·

Short answer: a private car with an English-speaking driver-guide in Sri Lanka costs USD 70–85 a day for a sedan, USD 85–100 for an SUV and USD 95–120 for a 9-seater van in 2026 — including fuel, tolls, unlimited kilometres and the driver's own meals and accommodation. Quotes below USD 60 a day almost always add those costs later. Here's the full breakdown from a Sri Lankan operator.

Typical routes for each trip length

3 days — Kandy and the hill country: Airport or Colombo to Kandy, visit the Temple of the Tooth, enjoy a scenic tea-country excursion towards Nuwara Eliya, and return to Colombo or the airport. A sedan is generally suitable for couples travelling with moderate luggage.

5 days — Cultural Triangle and Kandy: Explore Sigiriya, Dambulla and Polonnaruwa before continuing to Kandy, then return to Colombo or the airport. The itinerary can be adjusted according to arrival and departure times.

7 days — Classic Sri Lanka highlights: Travel through Sigiriya, Kandy, Nuwara Eliya and Ella, with an optional extension towards Yala or the southern coast depending on travel times and the guest's preferences. Some sightseeing stops may need to be shortened to keep the itinerary comfortable.

10 days — Sri Lanka discovery journey: Enjoy a more relaxed journey through the Cultural Triangle, Kandy, the hill country and Ella, with time for Yala wildlife experiences and southern coastal destinations such as Mirissa, Galle or Weligama, depending on the chosen route and interests.

These routes are examples of how each trip length is typically used, not fixed or guaranteed itineraries — every journey is planned around your dates, arrival times and interests.

Driving times are longer than they look on a map, so we plan each day around realistic road time rather than distance.

    What else to budget for

Tips: USD 8–12 per day from the whole group is standard for a good driver-guide.

Entry tickets: budget separately if you book chauffeur-only — Sigiriya, Yala and the Temple of the Tooth are the big ones.

Safari jeeps inside national parks are separate vehicles and are paid separately.

Nothing else is added on our side: no fuel top-ups, no driver food or hotel allowances, no kilometre caps on an agreed itinerary.

What the cheap quotes are hiding

Anything under USD 60/day is almost certainly excluding fuel — you'll be asked to top up at every petrol station and end up paying USD 25–35/day extra.

Cheap operators also commonly add: 'driver food allowance' (USD 10/day), 'driver hotel allowance' (USD 15/day), entry-fee handling charges, and kickback shopping stops at gem shops and spice gardens.

Our published rate is the rate. No fuel top-ups, no driver allowances, no shopping stops.

What you tip a Sri Lankan driver-guide

USD 8–12 per day from the whole group is standard and well-received for a good driver. USD 15+ for an exceptional one. There's no obligation, and your driver will never ask.

    Chauffeur-only vs full package

Chauffeur-only (car + driver + fuel): you book your own hotels and entry tickets. Best if you want maximum flexibility or are travelling on points/miles.

Full package (car + driver + hotels + entry fees + breakfast): we handle everything, you pay one price. Usually saves 5–10% vs booking separately because we have direct hotel contracts.

    Sample 7-day budget

2 adults, mid-range 3-star hotels, sedan: approximately USD 1,400 total for the trip.

Family of 4, 4-star hotels, 9-seater van: approximately USD 2,400 total for the trip.

Honeymoon, 5-star hotels, luxury SUV: approximately USD 3,200 total for the couple.

These are rough examples to help you plan, not fixed package prices — your quotation depends on dates, hotels and route.

    Quick questions about driver costs

Is the daily rate per person? No. It is per vehicle, so the cost is the same whether one or three people travel in a sedan.

Are prices higher at Christmas and New Year? They can be. Peak seasons, public holidays and other high-demand periods may cost more than the standard-season rates shown here.

Is a cheaper rate available for a single day? Single-day hires and airport transfers are quoted separately based on the distance and time involved.

Do I pay for the driver's hotel and meals? No. On a multi-day hire these are covered by us, not added to your bill.

How do I get an exact price? Send us your dates, group size and rough route and we will reply with a personalised quotation.
