The Ultimate 14-Day Sri Lanka Itinerary (2026 Local Guide)

Published by SW Ceylon Tours · Reviewed by the SW Ceylon Tours team ·

Fourteen days is the perfect amount of time for Sri Lanka. You see the cultural triangle, the hill country, a safari and a proper beach stretch — without the daily 6-hour drives that ruin shorter trips. Here is the exact 14-day route we run for private chauffeur guests.

Days 1–2: Negombo arrival & Sigiriya

Land at CMB, overnight in Negombo (15 min from airport), then drive 3 hours to Sigiriya the next morning. Climb the rock fortress at first light and visit Dambulla cave temple in the afternoon.

Days 3–4: Polonnaruwa, Minneriya & Kandy

Cycle the ruins of Polonnaruwa, then jeep safari at Minneriya for the elephant gathering. Drive to Kandy via a spice garden; evening Temple of the Tooth puja ceremony.

Days 5–6: Nuwara Eliya & the blue train to Ella

Scenic drive through tea country to Nuwara Eliya. Next morning, take the well-known Kandy–Ella hill-country train (reserve 1st class observation seats well in advance; schedules and reservation windows change). Driver meets you at Ella station.

Days 7–8: Ella & Yala safari

Hike Little Adam's Peak, photograph the Nine Arch Bridge, then drop down to Tissamaharama for a full-day Yala leopard safari.

Days 9–11: Mirissa, Galle & southern beaches

Whale watching from Mirissa, swimming at Hiriketiya, sunset at Galle Fort ramparts. Three nights here is the right amount — most people wish they'd booked more.

Days 12–14: Bentota beach & Colombo departure

Slow down at Bentota for two days of pure beach time. Final night in Colombo for shopping at Paradise Road and dinner at Ministry of Crab before your airport transfer.
