Sri Lanka Tours from the Middle East (UAE, Saudi, Qatar, Oman)

Published by SW Ceylon Tours · Reviewed by the SW Ceylon Tours team ·

Sri Lanka is a favourite short-haul escape for Gulf-based travellers looking for greenery, beaches and cool mountain air. Direct daily flights from every major Gulf hub, plenty of Halal-friendly options, and prices well below the Maldives. Entry requirements depend on the passport you hold rather than your Gulf residency — see the visa section below. Here's the practical guide.

Flight times from each GCC city

Dubai (DXB) → Colombo (CMB): 4h 30m direct, Emirates / SriLankan / FlyDubai.

Doha (DOH) → CMB: 4h 45m direct, Qatar Airways / SriLankan.

Abu Dhabi (AUH) → CMB: 4h 35m direct, Etihad.

Riyadh (RUH) → CMB: 5h 30m direct, Saudia / SriLankan.

Muscat (MCT) → CMB: 4h 15m direct, Oman Air / SriLankan.

Kuwait (KWI) → CMB: 5h 15m direct, Kuwait Airways / SriLankan.

    Visa & arrival

Sri Lanka's entry rules follow your passport nationality, not your Gulf residency, so there is no single ETA rule or price for everyone flying from the GCC. Most tourists apply for an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) online before flying. With effect from 25 May 2026, nationals of 40 selected countries — the published list includes Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the UAE — can obtain a 30-day tourist ETA free of charge, subject to the official conditions; expatriate residents are assessed on their own passport nationality. Check eta.gov.lk for your nationality. Important: Sri Lankan visa and ETA requirements, eligibility and fees may change. Travelers should always verify the latest requirements with the Sri Lanka Department of Immigration & Emigration (immigration.gov.lk) or the official ETA service before traveling. Last verified: 10 August 2026.

Arrival is at Bandaranaike International (CMB), 35 km north of Colombo. Our driver will meet you at arrivals with a name board (free, included in every tour).

    Halal food in Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka has a Muslim population of around 10%, so Halal restaurants are easy to find in Colombo, Kandy, Nuwara Eliya and along the south coast. We book hotels with Halal kitchens on request and our drivers know the best Halal restaurants in every town we pass through.

    Best months for GCC travellers

Eid Al-Fitr (Apr/May): hot but doable; go to hill country.

Eid Al-Adha (Jun/Jul): perfect for east coast (Trincomalee — calm clear sea, great for kids).

Winter break (Dec–Feb): peak season; book 8 weeks ahead.

School holidays (Jul–Aug): east coast or hill country.
