Bentota is the original Sri Lankan beach resort town — a 90-minute expressway drive south of Colombo airport, with a long golden beach on one side and the calm Bentota River lagoon on the other. The two-water setup means safe swimming, easy water sports and a different vibe each direction.
How to get there
From Colombo airport (CMB): 90 minutes by private car via the southern expressway. From Galle: 60 minutes north along the coast road. Bentota also has a train station on the southern coastal line — scenic but slower.
The beach itself
Bentota Beach is wide, sandy and lined with resorts. The swimming is best between November and April when the sea is calmest; outside that window the surf can be strong and red flags go up.
For a quieter alternative, walk 10 minutes south to Induruwa Beach — same sand, fewer people.
Water sports on the lagoon
The Bentota River lagoon is where most water sports happen — jet skis, banana boats, wake boarding, kayaks, paddleboards and even speedboat tours. It's calm and safe regardless of the ocean conditions outside.
Diyakawa Water Sports and Sunshine Water Sports are the two long-standing operators with good safety records.
Madu River boat safari
A 2-hour boat trip up the Madu River (15 minutes south of Bentota) through mangrove tunnels, past a 200-year-old Buddhist temple on an island, with kingfisher and monitor lizard sightings. Roughly USD 25 per boat — easily the best half-day activity in Bentota.
Brief Garden and Lunuganga
Brief Garden was the home of artist Bevis Bawa — a tropical garden full of sculpture and shaded walks. Lunuganga is the country estate of architect Geoffrey Bawa, restored as a country house hotel and tour site. Both are 20–30 minutes from Bentota and a beautiful half day for design lovers.
Where to stay
Bentota has the densest cluster of resort hotels in Sri Lanka. Budget: Susantha's Beach Resort. Mid-range: Cinnamon Bey, Avani Bentota. Luxury: Anantara Bentota Resort, Taj Bentota or the historic Bentota Beach by Cinnamon (originally a Geoffrey Bawa design).
How to fit Bentota into your trip
Bentota works best as a 2–3 night beach break at the start or end of a tour. It's close enough to the airport for an easy first-night arrival, and the resorts have the kind of pools and food you want at the end of a busy island circuit.
