Sigiriya — the 5th-century rock fortress — is the highlight of most first trips to Sri Lanka. But there is no airport near it, so almost everyone has to make the transfer from Colombo (CMB). Here is the practical guide our office sends to guests before arrival.
How long is the drive, really?
Colombo to Sigiriya is 175 km. Google Maps optimistically says 3 hours 45 minutes via the A6. In reality, between Kurunegala traffic and the single-lane sections past Dambulla, plan for 4.5 to 5 hours door-to-door.
Leaving Colombo before 07:00 or after 10:00 helps you avoid the worst of it. Friday afternoons are the slowest day of the week.
The stops worth making
Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage: controversial — we now recommend the Elephant Freedom Project at Rambukkana instead, which is more ethical and 15 minutes off the route.
Dambulla Cave Temple: 17 km before Sigiriya and a perfect 60-minute break. UNESCO-listed, 5 caves, more than 150 Buddha statues. Combines naturally with the Sigiriya climb the next morning.
Spice garden in Matale: skip unless you specifically want to shop. Most are commission-driven tourist stops.
Should you climb Sigiriya the same day you arrive?
No. You arrive tired, the rock is a 1,200-step climb in the heat, and the late-afternoon light is harsh. Check into your hotel, swim, eat early, and climb Sigiriya at 06:30 the next morning before the crowds and the sun.
Airport pickup: going straight from CMB to Sigiriya
Most international flights land at Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB) in Katunayake, north of Colombo city. The airport is already on the Sigiriya side of Colombo, so there is no need to go into the city first — a private driver can meet you in the arrivals hall and head inland directly.
Share your flight number rather than just a landing time, so your driver can track delays. Allow time after landing for immigration, baggage and a SIM card or currency exchange; this can be quick or slow depending on how many flights arrive together.
Tell us your luggage and group size in advance. A sedan suits two travellers with normal bags, while families or groups with large suitcases, surfboards or golf bags are better in an SUV or van.
Planning around your arrival time
Journey times depend on traffic, roadworks, weather and how many stops you make, so treat any estimate as a guide rather than a promise. Early-morning and late-night arrivals usually meet lighter traffic; mid-day and Friday-afternoon arrivals often meet more.
If you land late at night or after a long-haul overnight flight, consider a first night near the airport in Negombo and driving to Sigiriya the next morning. It is safer and more comfortable than a long drive while jet-lagged, and it gives you daylight for a stop at Dambulla.
If you land in the morning, driving straight to Sigiriya works well — plan a lunch stop on the way and arrive in time for an early night before a sunrise climb.
Colombo to Sigiriya: quick FAQ
Can the driver meet us inside the airport? Yes — drivers normally wait in the arrivals area with a name board. We confirm the meeting point and the driver's contact number before you fly.
Can we stop at Dambulla on the way? Yes. The cave temple is close to Sigiriya and is a natural break on a private transfer. Remember to bring clothing that covers shoulders and knees.
What if our flight is delayed? Because the driver tracks your flight number, a delay does not normally cause a problem. Message us on WhatsApp if your flight changes.
Can the same driver continue with us after Sigiriya? Yes. Many guests keep the same chauffeur-guide for the Cultural Triangle, Kandy and the hill country, which avoids arranging separate transfers.
