Best Beaches in Sri Lanka: A Local's Honest 2026 Guide

Published by SW Ceylon Tours · Reviewed by the SW Ceylon Tours team ·

Sri Lanka has 1,340 km of coastline and two monsoons — which means there's a beautiful beach in season every month of the year. The trick is knowing which coast is calm when. Here is the honest local breakdown.

    Quick season cheat sheet

South and west coasts (Mirissa, Unawatuna, Bentota, Hikkaduwa): calm December–April. Rough and stormy May–October.

East coast (Arugam Bay, Pasikuda, Nilaveli, Trincomalee): calm May–September. Rough and stormy October–April.

Pick the coast that matches your travel month and you'll have postcard conditions.

Mirissa — best for whales and chilled-out evenings

Mirissa is the south coast favorite — a wide crescent bay with surfable waves on one end, a calm swimming area in the middle and Parrot Rock for sunset. Best between December and April, when it's also blue-whale watching season.

Stay 2 nights minimum to fit in a whale-watching morning and a Coconut Tree Hill photo at sunrise.

Unawatuna — calm waters near Galle

Unawatuna is the most family-friendly south coast beach — a sheltered bay with reef-protected calm water, perfect for kids and weak swimmers. Only 15 minutes from Galle Fort, so easy to combine.

Get an early morning swim in; afternoons get busy with day-trippers.

Bentota — west coast luxury and water sports

Bentota is where Sri Lanka's beach resort scene began — a long sandy stretch with the Bentota River on one side and the Indian Ocean on the other. The lagoon means safe water sports (jet ski, banana boat, kayaking) and the resorts here are some of the best on the island.

Easy 90-minute transfer from Colombo airport — popular for first or last nights of a tour.

Hikkaduwa — surf, snorkeling and party vibe

Hikkaduwa is louder, more backpacker, and has a coral reef just offshore (snorkel from the beach) plus reliable beginner waves. Skip if you want quiet; pick if you want bars, surf schools and budget guesthouses.

Tangalle — the secluded south coast pick

An hour east of Mirissa, Tangalle has long empty beaches and boutique villas instead of resorts. Currents can be strong on the open beaches — swim in the protected coves only. Best for honeymooners and travelers who want to disconnect.

Arugam Bay — the east coast surf capital

Arugam Bay is Sri Lanka's surf town — a single sandy road with surf schools, beach bars and the iconic right-hand point break. Season runs May–September; best for intermediate surfers, but beginner-friendly spots exist nearby.

Nilaveli & Trincomalee — clear water and Pigeon Island

The far northeast has the clearest water in Sri Lanka — turquoise, shallow, and almost waveless from May to September. Take a short boat to Pigeon Island for some of the best snorkeling in the country, with reef sharks if you're lucky.

Pasikuda — east coast resort beach

Pasikuda is a shallow bay where you can walk 100 m out at low tide — perfect for families with small kids. Most accommodation is mid-range to luxury resorts.

Beaches to skip (or visit only briefly)

Negombo: convenient for the airport, but the beach itself is unspectacular and the water isn't the cleanest. Use it only for the first or last night.

Mount Lavinia (Colombo): a city beach — fine for a sunset walk but not a destination.
